Excercise of academic writing
(From ICOSA, HKBU)

Academic writing has a quite distinctive style compared with other kinds of writing, as follows:

  • it has a particular set of academic vocabulary, such as technical terms from specific fields;
  • the content and presentation should be precise, formal and detached;
  • it should be built on previous published and personal ideas;
  • it should reflect critical thinking skills of writers; and
  • academic writing in different disciplines vary with each other.
1. Be formal and detached. It is important to avoid emotive language, personal stories, colloquial terms and ambiguous grammar in the writing.

2. Keep the writing simple. Academic writing should be concise and simple. The goal is to clearly guide the reader through your work, so all ideas need be presented as easy to understand as possible. Complex materials are usually relegated to footnotes and appendices so as not to distract from overall argument.
