Suggestions for effective interaction with your supervisor may guarantee a smooth writing process.
  1. Write a short agenda for each meeting, stating the objectives.
  2. Take notes from your meeting and summarize the discussion points.
  3. When you hand in a substantial chunk of writing, consider providing some useful information like:
    • a gentle reminder of the date by which your supervisor has agreed to return comments
    • an outline of your material
    • a context of your material
    • highlighting sections where you would especially welcome comments
  4. Have a hard copy for yourself (always double-spaced and typed) when you meet with the supervisor.
  5. Schedule the next meeting at the end of the current meeting, so your supervisor and you can work out any schedule conflicts on the spot (ideally).
  6. If there is any possibility that meetings may not occur for an extended time, sending periodic progress reports is highly recommended.
  7. Create an “investigator’s journal”, which over time forms a chronological record of work you have done, along with ideas, suggestions and comments about your work.
