Suggestions for effective interaction with your supervisor may guarantee a smooth writing process.
- Write a short agenda for each meeting, stating the objectives.
- Take notes from your meeting and summarize the discussion points.
- When you hand in a substantial chunk of writing, consider providing some useful information like:
- a gentle reminder of the date by which your supervisor has agreed to return comments
- an outline of your material
- a context of your material
- highlighting sections where you would especially welcome comments
- Have a hard copy for yourself (always double-spaced and typed) when you meet with the supervisor.
- Schedule the next meeting at the end of the current meeting, so your supervisor and you can work out any schedule conflicts on the spot (ideally).
- If there is any possibility that meetings may not occur for an extended time, sending periodic progress reports is highly recommended.
- Create an “investigator’s journal”, which over time forms a chronological record of work you have done, along with ideas, suggestions and comments about your work.
