The English Total Immersion Summer Camp 2008 is now open for application!
The camp was offered by the EEPRS (Effective English for Postgraduate Research Students) programme of the Department of English (ENGL) for the first time in 2007. It aims at providing full-time postgraduate research students with a comprehensive overview of various ways to enhance English competence for their research degrees. Participating students can immerse themselves in a complete English-speaking environment with academic staff of ENGL, develop their confidence to communicate in English in their daily life.
Below is the arrangement for this year's camp:
Date: 23 - 24 August 2008 (Saturday & Sunday)
Venue: Harbour Plaza Resort City, Tin Shui Wai (¤Ñ¤ô³ò¹Å´ò®ü¶h°s©±)
Highlights of the programme
- Special seminar by Prof. Alan Davies, Emeritus Professor of Applied Linguistics, University of Edinburgh
- Workshops by academic staff of ENGL to address the English needs of postgraduate research students
- Get connected with Nature: Wetland Park Outing
Camp fee: FREE of charge (A deposit of HKD200 is required to pay at the time of registration to guarantee attendance. The money will be refunded when the participant completes the whole camp.)
Eligibility: The Camp is for FULL-TIME postgraduate research students ONLY
Registration: Completed application form (downloaded from here) should be returned to Ms Carolyn Lui, Rm AG428, General Office of ENGL together with the HKD200 deposit by 8 August 2008 (Friday). Registration is on a first come, first served basis.

Prof. Alan Davies, Emeritus Professor & Honorary Fellow, Edinburgh University
Prof. Davies has taught English and Applied Linguistics in the UK, Kenya, Nepal, Hong Kong and Australia. ?He has served as President of the British Association of Applied Linguistics, Secretary-General of AILA and President of the International Language Testing Association, which awarded him its first Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. ?He has also served as Editor of the journals Applied Linguistics and Language Testing. ?His more recent publications include: Introduction to Applied Linguistics (Edinburgh University Press 1999, 2nd edition 2007), The Native Speaker: Myth and Reality (Multilingual Matters 2003), Assessing Academic English: Testing English Proficiency 1950-1989 (Cambridge University Press and Cambridge ESOL 2008). |
