Q1: General programme information

HKDSE

  • There is NO direct entry to BAESP and the previous JUPAS code: 3399 will not exist.
  • Students should enroll in the Broad Discipline of Language, Culture and Communication (BDLCC) (JUPAS Code: JS3480) if they would like to study the below programmes:
    • BA(Hons) in English Studies for the Professions (BAESP) (專業英文(榮譽)文學士) offered by the Department of English
    • BA(Hons) in Chinese and Bilingual Studies (BACBS) (中文及雙語(榮譽)文學士) offered by the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies
  • BD students can enrol in BAESP in Year 2 according to their desire since there will be NO quota restrictions
  • Tuition fee is HK$42,100 per academic year
  • Admission Criteria:

1. Satisfy the University's General Entrance Requirements of 4 core and 1 elective subjects with:

  • Level 3 in English Language and Chinese Language; and
  • Level 2 in Mathematics, Liberal Studies and one elective subject.

2. Highest weighting will be given in the calculation of admission scores to the following subjects:

  • Chinese; and
  • English.

3. Additional elective subject(s) is/are counted as additional Reference Score which will be taken into account when candidates have the same admission score.

HKALE

  • Programme code: 3399
  • Average AL score:  11.1 (2011); 11.5 (2010); 10.9 (2009); 10.3 (2008)*

*(All AS subjects apply a weighting factor of 0.6)

  • Grade D in HKALE (AS-Level) Use of English
  • Cut-off AL score: 8
  • Tuition fee is HK$42,100 per academic year

Intake Number: 48 (with an additional 12 senior year places and 6 advanced standing places)

Q2: How to calculate different scores (HKALE)?

Stage 1 [Faculty Admission]: Cut-off score: 8.0  (Remark: All AS subjects apply a weighting factor of 0.6)

Stage 2 [Admission Score]: AS subjects (CLC + UE: weighting factor of 1); AL subjects (weighting factor of 1)

Q3: Can I take any minor programmes for my study?

Yes. A BAESP student who opts for the Major & Minor route will have BAESP as their Major and another discipline offered by PolyU as their Minor.  The student needs to complete at least 18 credits by taking subjects offered by a Minor from a PolyU academic department within FH or outside FH to satisfy the credit requirement of the Minor-offering department.

Q4: What is Work-Integrated Education (WIE) placement and its purpose?


Purpose: Provide students a practical working experience in the real world
Possible working locations: Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, or overseas
Duration: About one month (students need to fulfill a minimum of 60 hours of placement)

Credit bearing: Yes (3 credits)

Duration: One semester (Year 2 /Year 3)

Q6: What are my career prospects upon graduation from this programme?

Possible job fields for BAESP graduates include corporate communication, sales and marketing, customer service, public relations, information offices, media and journalism, and other occupations which need employees with strong communicative ability in English.

Q7: What are the differences between the BAESP programme and English-major degree programmes offered by other local institutions?

Our programme is not a traditional English literature degree programme. It focuses on practical application – students will be equipped with effective skills in professional communication via a firm grounding in language studies.  This will be useful for them to solve real-world problems effectively in local and global multilingual professional/business workplace settings.

Q8: If I pursue the double-degree option, what is the tuition fee for the additional self-financed year?


HKDSE: If students cannot finish the double degree in four years, the tuition fee for the additional self-financed year is HK$54,730.

HKALE: Students need to get an extra 36 credits to qualify for the double degree.  The tuition fee for the additional self-financed year is HK$54,730.

Q9: Can I have more information about the Scholarship for Prospective English Teachers offered by the Education Bureau?

  • The scholarship is to attract persons proficient in English to pursue relevant degree programmes which will make them eligible to qualify to become English language teachers on graduation.
  • Applicants should have attained Grade B or above in UE of the HKALE or equivalent (grade for HKDSE students has yet to announced by the EDB).
  • Each local student will be awarded HK$50,000 per year and non-local students, HK$80,000 per year.
  • Awardees of the Scholarship should fulfill a teaching obligation by teaching English full-time in primary or secondary schools in Hong Kong for 3 years immediately after graduation.

Q10: Will there be any interview for admission to this programme?

  • There will be no interview for JUPAS applicants.
  • Shortlisted non-JUPAS applicants will be invited to interviews if necessary.  It will be individual and/or group interview and it will be conducted in English.
