Developing and Applying Knowledge of the English Language

Aims

  1. To update your knowledge of the systems and uses of English and how these relate to your work
  2. To give you the chance to learn new concepts in English language studies and apply these to your work

  4. Professional Recognition : The MAELS meets EDB's Subject Knowledge Requirement ( SKR ) and also meets the Language Proficiency Requirement ( LPR ) provided that on graduation students meet the training requirement for language teachers

 

Entrance Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in any subject or the equivalent, with preference given to applicants who majored in English or a Communications-related field.

Applicants who are not native speakers of English are expected to fulfil the following English language requirement for admission purposes:

  • A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 590 or above for the paper-based test; or a TOEFL score of 243 or above for the computer-based test; or a TOEFL score of 96 or above for the internet-based test;
    OR
  • A score of at least 7.0 on listening and reading sections with no subscore below 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS);
    OR
  • Chinese mainland’s Test for English Major (TEM) Level 8;
    OR
  • A competence level in English which is equivalent to that which would satisfy any of the above requirements.
Exceptional cases will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Programme Structure

Full-time: 1 yr (2 semesters and 1 summer term)

Part-time: 2 yrs (4 semesters and 1 summer term)

1. ENGL5008 Introduction to the Sound System of English 3 Credits
2. ENGL539 English Semantics and Lexis 3 Credits
3. ENGL540 Analytical Perspectives in English Grammar 3 Credits
4. ENGL519 Discourse Analysis 3 Credits
5. ENGL542 Language Development and Use 3 Credits
6. ENGL543 English Literature and Language Arts 3 Credits

Total:

18 Credits

Elective Subjects
To obtain 12 further credits, 2 options are offered.

Option 1

The first option consists of a research methods subject (3 credits) and a project (9 credits).

1. ENGL518 Research Design and Methods 3 Credits
2. ENGL559 Research Project (15,000 words) 9 Credits

12 Credits

Option 2

The second option will be chosen by students who prefer a more structured approach to learning. Students pursuing this option will study four elective subjects. Information on the subjects offered can be obtained at http://www.engl.polyu.edu.hk/Courses/MAscheme-electives_1011.html.

Remarks:

Students can pursue their study either in full-time mode or part-time mode. Depending on their pace of study, students should normally be able to complete the programme full-time in 1 year and part-time in 2 years. Students will be required to attend classes in the daytime and evening if they choose the full-time mode of study. Part-time students may be required to attend evening classes for certain electives.
