Master of Arts in English Language Arts
英語語言藝術文學碩士學位課程

For full-time & part-time students joining in the academic year 2009/10.

Programme Aims

This programme offers training in specific areas of the English Language Arts. It provides materials and perspectives consistent with recent trends in the new school curriculum in Hong Kong. Currently unique in Hong Kong, this programme provides:

  • subjects which reflect current trends and demands on language teachers and business trainers in Hong Kong

  • opportunities to learn new concepts in English language and language arts studies, such as literature, media, popular culture, drama, spoken language arts (choral poetry reading, debating) and language learning/teaching

  • innovative approaches to language studies and language arts which reflect the literacy and language of the present community

  • insights into linguistic and educational issues related to using the English Language Arts

  • opportunities to reflect on and relate recent trends in the English Language Arts to students' own experience and practice
  • a critical perspective designed to equip students for the challenges of teaching and working environments in which visual, civic, cultural and technological literacies are important

In line with current trends in Hong Kong education and language teaching, in business coaching and training, and in cognitive therapies, the MAELA programme will teach students about contemporary language arts subject areas and materials, integrate language arts methods and materials with visual, civic, cultural and technological literacies, and support teachers in specific areas of the new Hong Kong high school curriculum. Further, it will help develop students’ capacity to reflect on and critically appraise their current classroom or workplace communicative practices in the light of the knowledge and concepts acquired during their studies.

Professional Recognition

New and serving English language teachers who do not hold a degree majoring in English but have completed the MAELA programme successfully may be regarded by the Education Bureau (EDB) as having a relevant language major degree. Permission for the MAELA to be exempt from the EDB's Subject Knowledge Requirement (SKR) and English Language Proficiency Requirement (LPR) has been requested, and this request is pending approval. Exemptions are expected for the Education Bureau's (EDB) Subject Knowledge Requirement (SKR) and Language Proficiency Requirement (LPR).

For the MAELA, these two EDB exemptions would apply to students obtaining the MA (30 credits) and the PgD (18 credits) in the MAELA programme if approval is granted. However, these two EDB exemptions would not be gained by students graduating with a PgC (12 credits).
