Developing and Applying Knowledge of the English Language

Aims

  1. To update your knowledge of the systems and uses of English and how these relate to your work
  2. To give you the chance to learn new concepts in English language studies and apply these to your work

  4. Professional Recognition : the PgD meets EMB!|s subject knowledge requirement for teachers (SKR) and the MA meets both the SKR and the Language Proficiency Requirement (LPR)

 

Entrance Requirements

First degree or equivalent.

Programme Structure

Normal programme duration is 2 years; that is, 4 semesters and part of the PolyU summer term of the first year. Teaching will normally be on Saturdays. The six compulsory subjects taught in the first year constitute a foundation of essential subject knowledge. Every subject bears 3 credits and this yields a total of 18 credits for foundation-related studies:

Year 1

1. ENGL538 Aspects of the Sound System of English 3 Credits
2. ENGL539 English Semantics and Lexis 3 Credits
3. ENGL540 Analytical Perspectives in English Grammar 3 Credits
4. ENGL519 Discourse Analysis 3 Credits
5. ENGL542 Language Development and Use 3 Credits
6. ENGL543 English Literature and Language Arts 3 Credits

Total:

18 Credits

Year 2
In the second year, students will need to obtain 12 further credits and 2 options will be offered to achieve this.

Option 1

The first option consists of a research methods subject (3 credits) and a project (9 credits).

2. ENGL559 Research Project (15,000 words) 9 Credits

12 Credits

Option 2

The second option will be chosen by students who prefer a more structured approach to learning. Students pursuing this option will study four subjects each bearing 3 credits by selecting from the three categories of elective subjects below.
