BA (Hons) in English Studies for the Professions(BAESP)

JUPAS Code: JS3480 (Broad Discipline of Language, Culture and Communication)

 

BAESP provides you with a set of knowledge and skills to communicate effectively in English for professional and business purposes in Hong Kong and internationally, where English functions as the key medium of communication (lingua franca) in various types of professional activity. Upon graduation you should have the ability to handle demanding professional tasks such as:

  • Writing a challenging press release for an organisation;
  • Developing promotional materials in the service industries, including air transport, banking, computer and information technology, telecommunications, and tourism, convention and exhibition;
  • Promoting an organisation’s image through developing corporate literature;
  • Making requests of colleagues and business partners in complicated situations; and
  • Critiquing your own professional performance and that of others.

Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes

The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Programme in English Studies for the Professions (BAESP) aims at nurturing and developing students with abilities/attributes that will prepare our graduates to become competent English language professionals and responsible global citizens in the 21st century. At the professional level, the programme aims to produce graduates with a) a high level of competence in English, b) a sound understanding of the theoretical disciplines underlying applied English language studies and the integrated use of languages concerned, and c) a strong ability to apply their knowledge and generic linguistic skills in a variety of professional communication contexts.

The programme will equip graduates with professional /academic knowledge and skills as well as attributes for all-roundedness in an integrated manner. The programme aims to produce graduates:

  1. who possess a high level of professional communicative competence in English;
  2. who have a firm grounding in language studies which can be critically and creatively applied in a variety of business and management contexts;
  3. who have an awareness and understanding of intercultural communication in multilingual settings that enhances their global outlook and cultural appreciation;
  4. who are able to apply their strong communication skills to solving real-world problems effectively in local and global multilingual professional/business settings.
  5. who are capable of exercising judgment and developing intellectual curiosity to work both independently and as part of a team;
  6. who are aware of the need for and are committed to life-long learning; and
  7. who will have the potential to become future leaders and entrepreneurs excelling in communication for professional purposes.

 

Recognition by the Education Bureau of Hong Kong

The programme is recognised by the Education Bureau and its Standing Committee on Language Education and Research as an English Language Major Degree Programme which meets the Hong Kong Government’s Language Proficiency Requirement. Applicants to this programme are eligible to apply for the Scholarship for Prospective English Teachers offered by the Education Bureau.

 

Entrance Requirements

(JUPAS)
For applicants admitting through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS), the minimum entrance requirement are the same as those of PolyU’s:

  • Level 3 or above in English Language and Chinese Language; and
  • Level 2 or above in Mathematics, Liberal Studies and one elective subject.

 

The following subjects will be given the highest weighting in the calculation of admission scores:

  • Chinese Language
  • English Language

 

Alternative Entry Route (Non-JUPAS)

Applicants who possess a Higher Diploma/Associate Degree in a language-related discipline may be considered for entry to Year 3 of the programme.
