Aims

Our programme aims to produce graduates:

  • who have a firm grounding in language studies which can be critically and creatively applied in a variety of business and management contexts, especially in multilingual settings;
  • who are aware of the benefits afforded by information technology both to their studies and their future careers;
  • who will become future leaders and entrepreneurs excelling in communication for professional purposes;
  • who possess a high level of professional communicative competence in English; and
  • who will be highly valued by employers in multilingual professional settings for their effective communication skills in the principal languages of local, national and international business.

Programme Characteristics

  • The programme will equip graduates with a sound academic knowledge of the English language and effective skills in professional communication, as well as attributes for all-roundedness.
  • Along with a major in English Studies, you can also take a minor in another discipline offered by the University.
  • A variety of teaching and learning methods are adopted, including lectures, interactive seminars, language laboratory work, talks by guest speakers, and workplace visits and placements.
  • You can explore and appreciate the global and cultural dimensions of the subjects studied and further develop yourself professionally through participating in summer programmes abroad and credit-earning student exchange programmes overseas.
  • The emphasis placed by the programme on learner autonomy, self-directed learning and group work helps to develop your sense of entrepreneurship and leadership.

 

Work-Integrated Education

You will be required to undertake a Work-Integrated Education (WIE) placement in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, or overseas. This placement typically lasts for one month and will provide you with valuable work experience in the real world.

 

Periods Abroad

Summer Immersion Field Trips
You will be expected to participate in a Summer English Immersion Field Trip in an English-speaking country. Our current Summer Immersion Programmes are hosted by the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom and the Southern Cross University in Australia.

Student Exchange Programmes
BAESP students can apply for participation in credit-earning Student Exchange Programmes, which will enable them to spend a semester overseas at one of our partner universities in China or an English-speaking country.



Career Prospects

Graduates from the BAESP Programme should be able to find employment in managerial or administrative positions in the private and public sectors, such as sales and marketing, customer services, public relations, journalism and the media, especially in multilingual settings, where there is a need for English communication.

 

Programme Structure and Subjects

The programme consists of two major stages: the Foundation Period and the Deepening Period.

During the Foundation Period, you are required to study:

  • thirteen English foundation subjects to provide you with a solid foundation of English knowledge and skills;
  • two Chinese subjects to further enhance your proficiency in Chinese and Putonghua;
  • a workplace training subject (Work-Integrated Education); and
  • two General Education subjects to promote your all-round development.

During the Deepening Period, you can choose from a large number of elective subjects provided by this programme.

Your Study Options

The programme allows you to pursue one of the following three study options:
  • BA (Hons) in English Studies for the Professions (BAESP)as a single degree programme in English Studies (3 years; 97 credits)
  • BA (Hons) in English Studies for the Professions (BAESP)under the Major/Minor option with English as Majorand a Minor from BACBS (3 years; 97 credits)
  • BAESP and BA (Hons) in Chinese and Bilingual Studies as Double Majors (4 years; 133 credits). The extra 36 creditsshould be obtained on a self-financed basis in the fourth year.

 

Entrance Requirements

(JUPAS)
For entry with HKALE qualifications, you must satisfy the General Minimum Entrance Requirements of the University, and the following specific subject requirement of this programme:

Grade D in HKALE (AS-Level) Use of English.

Alternative Entry Route (Non-JUPAS)
Applicants who possess a Higher Diploma/Associate Degree in a language-related discipline may be considered for entry to Year 2 of the programme.
